CITIZENS’ COMMITTEE HOLDS TOWN MEETING TO DISCUSS URBAN RENEWAL PLAN

The Citizens’ Committee will be holding a town meeting to look after residents interests in regard to, Montreal’s plan of urban renewal taking place in a neighbourhood of 14,00 residents.

Kamloops, BC – November 5, 2021

Residents of the neighbourhood Little Burgundy are experiencing the outcome of Montreal’s vast plan of urban renewal, as some of 300 families in the St. Martins block have already received exportation notices. The city is claiming possession of these blocks for the purpose of urban renewal and, the residents have been advised they must vacate the premises on September 1, or before then if they wish so. Residents who were evicted have been temporarily relocated and, are designated to return if they wish when the urban renewal is completed. Two representatives from the former St. Martin’s block have visited the city’s housing project, to see what they can expect. This visit has left members of the neighbourhood even more dissatisfied and, as a result the Citizen’s Committee has been created to hold meetings to look after the people’s best interest.

The Citizen’s Committee, created by representatives from the former St. Martin’s block who felt dissatisfied with how, the city has handled the interests of the 300 families forced out of their homes. “People were lucky enough to get out of there on time”, says Jane Doe, one of the representatives. “It is fine if the city wants to help us, but not by taking our freedom”, which is how many residents felt after being relocated. “It is the duty of a society to offer available housing to those families who need it most”, said John doe, another representative. “Today it is you the people who give the signal through your representative to take your affairs into your own hands and are actively concerned through your citizen’s committee”.

The Citizen’s Committee will be holding a town meeting to discuss these issues and hear from you, the people on what matters to you. The meeting will take place tomorrow November 6, at 6:00pm, at the town hall. The Citizen’s Committee encourages residents to attend this meeting and speak on what they want. “We have fought to be recognized as representatives as former residents of St. Martins and, the right to a decent home” says Jane Doe. The Citizen’s Committee feels that meetings such as this one are important to attend because, “the residents should have an equal voice in administration, and we hope that this will lead to not only urban renewal, but human renewal”.

The Citizen’s Committee during the last two years, has had multiple main actions that they have undertook. They have made residents rights known, and made the committee recognized by, marching to city hall and hosting public meetings. The committee has also defined its aims and objectives concerning, administration and rent scales of the new housing. The committee has continued to show their commitment to the residents by, making a study with all the citizens of the neighbourhood on the rent scale and everything else involved with new housing.
